Teenagers Dazai Fumiya and Nakahara Yuuko are estranged siblings after their parents’ divorce ten years ago, and their turbulent reunion presages a new threat to Yokohama’s ability users. Appearance & Personality

Fumiya is a teenager with short, dark, wavy hair and hazel eyes. He uses a hearing aid in his left ear.

He is calm, dexterous, and intelligent with keen observational skills. He inherits Dazai’s aptitude for detective work.

Ability

Songs of Days Past (在りし日の歌; arishi hi no uta) reverts any object to a previous condition of Fumiya’s choice. He can also revert abilities to an unused state via physical contact with the user, allowing for faux ability nullification.

Fumiya cannot use the ability on himself; doing so clashes with its “nullifying” nature, and would thus generate a singularity.

Namesake & References

Fumiya’s namesake is Nakahara Chuuya’s eldest son Fumiya, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 2. His ability references Nakahara’s anthology Songs of Bygone Days, which was dedicated to Fumiya after his death.

Appearance & Personality

Yuuko is a teenager with wavy, waist-length blonde hair and blue eyes. Several strands in her bangs are dyed a darker color.

She is intuitive and eager to jump into action, sharing her leadership skills and athletic flair with Chuuya.

Ability

The Laughing Wolf (笑いオオカミ; warai okami) grants Yuuko gravity manipulating abilities akin to her father’s. It also allows her to change into a black wolf with enhanced speed and strength.

Similar to her uncle Paul Verlaine, Yuuko hosts a singularity beast. The true form of her ability is the Demonic Beast [redacted], and very little is known about it as Yuuko has never entered that state before.

Namesake & References

Yuuko's namesake is Dazai Osamu's second daughter Tsushima Yuuko, who was a fiction writer, essayist, and critic. Her ability is a reference to Tsushima's award-winning novel Laughing Wolf.

Appearance & Personality

Ryutaro “Ryu” is a teenager with shoulder-length, caramel-colored hair. He ties his hair up in a half-ponytail.

He displays an aptitude for deduction and rationality seldom displayed for a person their age. He is mischievous while rarely tolerating boredom.

Ability

The Raven (大鴉; ogarasu) allows Ryu to understand and telepathically communicate with birds. He can talk to any avian at will, granting him access to information that the bird is willing to share.

His animal companion Hope is a rescue American crow. She is often seen on Ryu's shoulder, and acts as a mediator between Ryu and other birds when needed.

Namesake & References

Ryu’s namesake is Edogawa Ranpo's only child Hirai Ryutaro, who was a psychologist. His ability references Edgar Allan Poe's well-known poem The Raven.

Appearance & Personality

Mashiro is a young girl with long, silvery white hair and icy blue eyes. Her hairstyle changes a lot throughout the series.

While not very talkative, she enjoys being outdoors, and is curious and daring.

Ability

Black Cat Dreaming (夢見る黒猫; yume miru kuroneko) is a powerful ability similar to Atsushi's. Mashiro is able to turn into a snow leopard with increased speed, strength, and enhanced senses.

Her regeneration speed is shown to be faster than the white tiger's, and she displays an unnatural mastery over her ability when compared to Atsushi.

Namesake & References

Mashiro’s name is derived from Zilu (pronounced Shiro in Japanese), a disciple of Confucius depicted in Nakajima Atsushi’s The Disciple, and Masako, Nakajima’s daughter. Her ability is a reference to Izumi Kyouka’s novel Black Cat, as well as Nakajima’s novella Light, Wind and Dreams.

Appearance & Personality

Yasushi is a preteen with short black hair and lavender gray eyes. He often carries his headphones around.

Despite being a year behind in school, Yasushi displays boundless musical talent, and is a generous individual with sharp instincts.

Background & Ability

Yasushi lives with his caretakers and their pets Hamlet (chameleon) and Master (tuxedo cat). Before being taken in, he was an orphan living in Suribachi City. He is biologically related to Ruriko.

His ability, [???], is described to be one of a very rare genre. Not much is known about the genre itself let alone the ability, but Yasushi appears to be in good control of it.

Namesake & References

Yasushi’s namesake is Akutagawa Ryunosuke's third child Akutagawa Yasushi, who was a composer. His ability is named after Yasushi’s composition, [???].

Akutagawa Ruriko 芥川瑠璃子

Ability: Phantasmagoria (影灯籠; kagedoro)

Ruriko (she/her) is a 16-year-old Port Mafia battalion leader and Yuuko’s subordinate. Her ability transforms her jacket into a dark-matter monster that manipulates heat. She is Tachihara Michizo and Akutagawa Gin’s daughter. Her birthday is September 21.

Hirotsu Momoko 広津桃子

Ability: Flower Patterns (花模様; hana moyo)

Momoko (she/her) is a 17-year-old Port Mafia operative and Yuuko’s subordinate. Her ability creates invulnerable flower-shaped light-matter shields. She is the granddaughter of Hirotsu Ryuro. Her birthday is March 21.

Julian Hawthorne ジュリアン・ホーソーン

Ability: The Golden Fleece (金羊毛; kinyomo)

Julian (he/him) is a 10-year-old elementary school student and Yasushi’s classmate. The details of his ability are unknown. He is Margaret Mitchell and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s son. His birthday is June 22.

Jouno Kiyokata 条野清方

Ability: Falling Leaves and Drizzly Rain (落葉時雨; ochiba shigure)

Kiyokata “Kiyo” (they/he) is a 16-year-old Hunting Dogs trainee. The details of their ability are unknown. They are the child of Suehiro Tecchou and Jouno Saigiku. Their birthday is August 31.

Fukuzawa Ichitaro 福澤一太郎

Ability: The Wisteria Trellis (藤棚; fujidana)

Ichitaro “Ichi” (he/him) is a 25-year-old Armed Detective Agency associate who is an expert swordsman. The details of his ability are unknown. He is Fukuzawa Yukichi and Mori Ougai’s son. His birthday is November 22.

Sakaguchi Tsunao 坂口綱男

Ability: The Time That Stood Still (静止した時間; le temps arrêté)

Tsunao (he/him) is a 17-year-old affiliated with the Special Division for Unusual Powers. His ability allows him to inspect memories by entering moments captured in photographs. He is Oda Sakunosuke and Sakaguchi Ango’s son. His birthday is August 6.

Oguri Ryoichi 小栗亮一

Ability: Will O’ The Wisp (鬼火; onibi)

Ryoichi (he/him) is a 13-year-old middle school student and Tsunao’s younger brother. His ability generates little floating fire spirits. He is Yokomizo and Oguri Mushitaro’s son. His birthday is January 3.

Oguri Rumi 小栗瑠美

Ability: Winter Forest (冬の森; fuyu no mori)

Rumi (she/her) is a 13-year-old middle school student and Tsunao’s younger sister. Her ability covers up any traceable tracks, like scents or footprints. She is Yokomizo and Oguri Mushitaro’s daughter. Her birthday is January 3.
